Notes for the meeting
The meeting shared the philosophical parable of Blind Men and the Elephant - an ancient parable used as a warning for people that promote absolute truth or exclusive religious claims. The simple reason is that our sensory perceptions and life experiences can lead to limited access and overreaching misinterpretations. How can a person with a limited touch of truth turn that into the one and only version of all reality? (Quoted from All About Philosophy)
See here for Johm Saxe's version
The RIFF meeting shared texts from their own faith and from other faiths that offered particular insight to their foundation beliefs. Frances Deegan's poem "Don't tell me about your god" was read together with other texts shown below:
‘All Men are Brothers’ - Life and Thought of Mahatma Gandhi
"Everyone has faith in God though everyone does not know it. For everyone has faith in himself and that multiplied to the nth degree is God. The sum total of all that lives is God. We may not be God, but we are of God, even as a little drop of water is of the ocean."
Offered by Laurie Burrow
From the Sikh faith (as quoted by Lord Singh):
“God is not interested in religious labels but in how we serve our fellow human beings.”
Offered by Brian Davies
From my Christian faith:
Summarising the Law and the Prophets, Jesus said:
“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39).Ultimately Jesus expresses this even more briefly:
“I give you a new commandment: you must love one another.” (John 13:14). Because this is the way we show our love for God. “Anyone who says, I love God, and hates his brother, is a liar.” (1 John 4:20).Offered by Brian Davies
Quaker Faith and Practice A&Q 17
“Do you respect that of God in everyone though it my be expressed in unfamiliar ways or be difficult to discern?”
Offered by Laurie Burrow

Thu22Nov20187:30 pmUnited Reform Church,40 Hillmorton Rd, Rugby CV22 5AD
The meeting in November will formally cover the AGM. The main part of the evening will be a discussion about how RIFF could develop it's activities in 2019 and beyond. Everyone is welcome! Please come join us and help us build our vision for an integrated, mutually supportive community in Rugby.
The role of RIFF is to build interfaith understanding, demonstrate solidarity and confidence in and between the different faiths represented from Rugby. We have sat together and enjoyed together a few functions each year, such as the peace walk, public talks and concerts alongside the regular monthly meetings.
We don’t have to read books or need to understand deep philosophy. We try to build open mindedness and confidence based on our personal understandings of our faith through sharing with other faiths our insights, interpretations and understandings. The Rugby Interfaith Forum does not aim to be representative of faiths but is a gathering of people of good will willing to share their understandings of their faith and listen and talk to others, sharing insights and ideas to working together to develop an open, supportive, and friendly community drawn from the many faiths represented in Rugby.
“Our innermost prayer should be that a Hindu should be a better Hindu, a Muslim a better Muslim, a Christian a better Christian. I broaden my Hinduism by loving other religions than my own.”
Mahatma Gandhi

This fascinating lecture was held in Rugby in October 2017 is being repeated in Birmingham. The lecturer is Dr Priya Atwal (PhD in History at the University of Oxford), who speaks about her research on Sikh History. For the Rugby event all ticket sales went to 'Unite in Virtue' – a charitable organisation which helps those in need and holds a weekly food bank in Birmingham. In doing so we raised ~£600 to help sustain the Food Banks.
The Sikh community are organising a similar event with the same lecturer (Dr Priya Atwal) who will give a talk/presentation about Women in the Sikh Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries. It will take place in Birmingham at the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre. Tickets, (£5:00) can be purchased on-line here
The goal of this fundraiser is to achieve £1000 to go direct to 'Unite in Virtue' in order to start two new Food Banks, one in Coventry and a new one in Leicester. The money will help volunteers buy food, an urn for hot drinks, tables, paper/polystyrene cups, plastic cutlery, plastic containers etc on a weekly/monthly basis.
To help this event flourish and succeed to its maximum potential, please would you help to publicise and advertise this event by passing on the leaflet that can be downloaded here.
Thank you.

The Imam and the Pastor is a documentary film from the heart of Nigeria. It is a moving story of grass-roots peace-building that gives hope to humanity. This is a lead into the first discussion topic of 2020 on the subject of conflict, reconciliation and forgiveness.
RIFF needs your support so please come along and join the discussions.

This is the second part of the discussion topic on the subject of conflict, reconciliation and forgiveness.
The 2020 RIFF season of discussions started with a screening of the Imam and the Pastor - a documentary film from the heart of Nigeria. It is a moving story of grass-roots peace-building that gives hope to humanity.
We followed the film with a discussion of the Shendam Peace Affirmation - a document agreed by all the community of Yalwa Shendam following an outbreak of violence there. This document has relevence to the post -Brexit sitation in the UK today. You can read the document here.
At this next RIFF discussion we will show a sequel film 'An African Answer' in which the Imam and the Pastor support peace building initiatives in Kenya to rebuild community trust following serious election violence. More than one thousand people were killed following disputed elections in Kenya at the end of 2007. Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor Jame Wuye – former militia leaders turned peace-makers from Nigeria – were invited to mediate in the worst-affected district. This film depicts their dramatic bid to bring healing and reconciliation after death and destruction.
An African Answer, shot in Kenya, was premiered in Nairobi on 11 June 2010 in the Amani Room of the Serena Hotel in Nairobi. ‘Amani’ means peace in Swahili and the room acquired its name after Kenya’s post-election violence in 2008. It was here that Kofi Annan brokered the National Peace Accord and the formation of Kenya’s present coalition government. Please do come along to the discussion and support this second part of our considerations of conflict resolution and reconciliation.

As a consequence of the corona virus pandemic we have cancelled this third part of the discussion topic on the subject of conflict, reconciliation and forgiveness when we planned to have Pete Hicky come to speak to RIFF about his role as a Street Pastor in Rugby.
Hopefully we will be able to re-arrange the meeting at a later date.
